Let It Out

Paddy's Notes

Bill's violin really shines on this song. He blew us all away in the studio when he lay down the violin solo. I think it is from this song that we will move on. I hope it's a sign of the next things to come, musically anyway. I don't have the voice to sing it the way it needs to be sung and you can tell I was pushing vocally at some points during the tune. It's an angry song written on the fly. We were jamming with drummer Paul LaMarr, the drummer with Charlotte, North Carolina band Karma (brilliant band by the way!). We also had someone playing bass and lead guitar. It just came from that session, from a three chord structure I started playing and everyone responded to. Anyway, Paul particularly liked the idea and he suggested getting it recorded and finsihing it in time for inclusion on Live Love Now. Many of the other songs were written years before. During recording we tried in vain to recapture this brilliant guitar part played with the use of an ebow by Stanley Draughon during rehersal. We never really did, but the other music came quickly and easily. I wrote lyrics later in the recording process..........a first for me. For the most part this tune was recorded using different musicians than the other tunes so, all in all it was different for us and it seems to stick out on the record, not because it's better but it just sounds different.

Lyrically, Let it Out is a little confusing, even to me as the writer. I'm sure it is quite personal for me and I know what I was probably getting at during certain lyrical sections. It's an angry song, about twisted love, about one person manipulated by the other and then learning over time how to manipulate that person right back. The "Mother Mother" section is probably addressing the feelings of being separated from family and what that does to you - both good and bad - because distance can actually make you closer to those you love. It's also about the two distinct sides of a relationship, especially a bad relationship. The weak, the strong, the good, the bad, the anger and love, and how all these things get twisted and turned around. Letting it Out is a good thing most of the time and that's the ultimate conclusion regarding this tune. It's fun to play live with a band, and even acoustically. Hopefully it will survive the times and grow. As a performer I should start to understand it a little better the more I perform it.

Lyrics

I'm your good, You're my bad
I'm the love you cannot have
You're the weak, I'm the strong
But don't worry baby, it won't be long
The time has come to exorcise, demonize and realize
You're angry. You're Angry. So let it out.

The tolling bell rings in your head
You can't remember what I said
You twist the truth so easily
You strip me bare for all to see
Here before you stripped I stand
But I know the clothes don't make the man
You're starting now to see the light
You're angry. So let it out. Let it out. Let it out.

(Mother) Mother, Come and rescue me
(Brother) Brother, All's not what it used to be
(Sister) Sister, Try to understand
This little boy was made become a man.

Another one has turned out bad
It's an easy life they think you have
A sad soul in designer clothes
With a secret life that no one knows.

I've seen the lonely tears you've cried
I wish I didn't have to lie
But you like to use and you use so well
To the beat of the tolling bell
Let it out. Let it out - baby - Let it out.
Let it out.

You come to me in a vision
The centerpiece of your religion
You question my decisions
Your anger is my mission
Let it out. Let it out. Let it out.

La La Let it out. La La Let it out.
(OH NO) Not again. It comes around.
In the end)
Don't you love me. Please don't love me
Don't you love me. Please don't love me
